Cemetery Hydrogeological Risk Assessments

The demand of suitable sites for cemetery extensions and new cemeteries is increasing significantly. BlueRock Environmental provide expertise in the assessment of potential new sites and site extensions for small, medium and large-scale cemeteries across Ireland in accordance with both EPA and EA regulations and guidance documents i.e. Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 Risk Assessments.

BREL undertake all risk assessments in line with the Environment Agency Technical report P223 ‘ Assessing the Groundwater Pollution Potential of Cemetery Developments’. The level of assessment required is dependent on the level of risk posed to sensitive receptors.

The most basic assessment (Tier 1) involves a desk based screening exercise including a site visit and a qualitative assessment of the risk posed to the hydro environment.

The next level of assessment (Tier 2) typically involves a site investigation comprising some or all of the following: Trial Pitting, Borehole drilling, groundwater level monitoring and soil and water test. A Tier 2 assessment is recommended where the level of risk is not clearly defined. The assessment involves a quantitative risk assessment to determine if the level of risk posed is acceptable and if site-specific remedial measures are required to mitigate the risk.

The highest level of assessment (Tier 3) involves a Tier 2 investigation in addition to groundwater pollution modelling and assessment. This assessment is typically undertaken where a high level of risk is posed to groundwater or surface water or if additional clarification is required by the local regulators.
